Department OF Actuarial Science and Insurance
The Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance, University of Lagos has played a pioneering
role in the development of Actuarial and Insurance education in Nigeria. This has become So obvious that most leaders in the Nigerian Insurance and Financial Industries, and academics in higher institutions in Nigeria are products of the University of Lagos.
The overall philosophy of the Postgraduate Programmes in the Department is as follows;
i) The need to produce Scholars in Actuarial Science, Risk Management and Insurance.
ii) Other Universities in Nigeria and the nation’s Financial Institutions requiring the services of high- level manpower in these areas may take advantage of the these programmes for further training of their personnel.
In addition to the above, the postgraduate programmes are designed to advance the application of mathematics of Insurance and Finance, Statistical Methods to a wide range of Risk Management fields and also to equip students for analytical and technical consulting in applied key areas of insurance, Banking, Capital Market, Investment,life and Health, Pensions and Government services.
The department offers course leading to the following higher degrees;
Actuarial Science Programme
i. Master of Science degree Actuarial Science (M.Sc. Actuarial Science)
ii. Master of Philosophy degree in Actuarial Science (M.Phil. Actuarial Science)
iii. Doctor of Philosophy degree Actuarial Science (Ph.D. Actuarial Science)
Rick Management and Insurance Programme

i. Master of Science degree in risk Management and Insurance (M.Sc. Risk Management Insurance)
ii. Master of Philosophy degree in Risk Management and insurance
iii Doctor of Philosophy degree in Risk Management and Insurance (Ph.D. Risk Management and Insurance

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
M.Sc. Actuarial Science
Candidates for admission into Actuarial Science shall have – following;
i. First degree in Actuarial S from a recognized University
ii. First degree in Mathematics/Statistics, Economics, Finance and related areas.
M.Sc. Risk Management Insurance
Candidate for admission into M.Sc. Risk Management and Insurance
shall have the following:
i. First degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science or Risk Management from the
University of Lagos or any other recognized University
ii. First degree in Business Administration, Finance,Economics and other related areas.
M.Phil Actuarial Science
Candidate for admission into M.Phil Actuarial Science shall have the following:
i. A minimum of Second Class Upper Division or its equivalent in Actuarial Science,
Mathematics/Statistics, Economics or Finance.
ii. Candidate with Master of Science degree in Actuarial
Science, Mathematics! Statistics, Economics or Finance with a
Minimum CPGA of 3.50 or its equivalent.
iii. Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.
M.Phil Risk Management and Insurance
Candidate for admission into M.Phil Risk Management and Insurance shall have the following
i. A minimum of Second Class Upper Division or its equivalent in Insurance, Actuarial Science,
Risk Management or Finance.
ii. Candidate with Master of Science degree in Risk
Management and Insurance with a minimum CPGA of 3.50 or its equivalent
iii. Candidate may also be required to satisf the department in a selection process
Ph.D. Actuarial Science
Candidate for admission into Ph.D. Actuarial Science shall have the following:
i. Candidate with a Master of Science degree in Actuarial
Science with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent
ii. Candidate with M.Phil in Actuarial Science with a
minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent
iii. Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process
Ph.D. Risk Management and Insurance
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidate for admission into Ph.D. Risk Management and Insurance shall have the following
i. Candidate with a Master of Science degree in Risk
Management and Insurance with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its
equivalent
ii. Candidate with M.Phil in Risk Management and Insurance with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent
iii. Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
The salient features of the programme are:
* Construction of mortality; sickness, multiple decrement and other similar tables from graduated data.
* Determination and use of costs, regulation and taxes as well as valuation of corporate securities and the techniques for combining them efficiently into portfolios, and performance
* Sources and techniques of evaluation, graduation and estimation of survival functions from grouped mortality’ data; models of ageing and chronic diseases.
* Models for use in the analysis and actuarial valuation and management of life insurance and superannuation contracts.
* Integrated approach to risk management process with emphasis on risk management in industrial and commercial enterprises.
NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
By course work and examination
DURATION:
* The duration of the M.Sc Programme in Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance shall be two semesters.
* Master of Philosophy (M.PhIl.)
Full-Time: 4 Semesters (Minimum duration)
Part-Time: 6 Semesters (Minimum duration)
* Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
Full-Time: 6 Semesters (Minimum duration)
Part-Time: 9 Semesters (Minimum duration)
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
This course offers the graduate opportunities in Insurance companies and government departments as
actuaries. Also in health Insurance organizations, they determine capitalization and rates, while in banks and other financial institutions as credit analysts and self- employment as consulting actuaries.
