DEPARTMENT of Building
The postgraduate programme in the Department is being offered to expose professionals in Building,
Architecture, Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying to advanced management skills to handle in line
with their professional inputs diverse and complex projects from inception to completion.
Projects are getting increasing large, more complex; traditional approaches to project delivery are being reviewed due to increasing pressures from clients that are getting increasingly sophisticated. Furthermore, projects are being executed across climates and international cultures with different contract and procurement arrangements.
The provision of the postgraduate programme reflects a commitment to a belief that:
i. The Department sough the programme can contribute to production of high quality manpower that can cope with the increasing and ever- changing sophistication in the construction industry both nationally and internationally,
ii. A growth in the construction industry output can stimulate national development, The Department thus aims at promoting the knowledge and professional base of future managers of the construction industry,
iii. intellectual and professional capital can be explored and explored. The department in reviewing the programme believes that a sound knowledge of construction management best practices can enhance
the competitiveness of its graduates in international and multinational contracts, thus contributing to the growth of the Nigerian economy.
The Department of Building offers the following degree – programmes:
a. Postgraduate Diploma in Building Services (PGD ES)
b. Master of Science in Construction Management/Construction Technology
c. Master in Project Management (MPM)
d. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Degree in Building
e. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Building
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUILDING SERVICES
Building services, as a discipline is no longer concentrated only on the design of electrical and mechanical plants in buildings. On a wider front, it is also now concerned with environmental issues, such as illumination, thermal comfort, noise control and fire protection. Building production processes and economic considerations are also important to the design and installation of the services in building.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for admission into the POD (BS) programme candidate must hold;
a. (i) At least a B.Sc. Degree in Architecture, Estate Management, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics.
(ii) Any other equivalent qualification approved by the University.
iii. ln addition, an applicant may be required as a condition of admission to undergo a selection process
(ii) All applicants must satisfy other admission require- meats of the school of postgraduate studies.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
Building production processes in relation to environmental issues.
NATURE OE ASSESSMENT
Course Work/ Seminar/ Case Studies/ Research Proposal/Research Project.
DURATION
The minimum duration of the course is one (1) academic year or 12 calendar months

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
M.Sc. Construction Management Designed for professionals in Building, Civil Engineering Quantity Surveyors and Architecture to broaden their skills in the management of large and complex construction projects from inception to completion. While the programme prepares interested students for the world of future research, it also exposes them to international best practices in construction management.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for admission into the M.Sc. degree programme a candidate must hold;
i. A professionally registrable degree in Architecture @Arch, M.Sc, M.E.D., M.Arch) or at least a Bachelor of Science Degree in Building, Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying.
ii. All applicants may be required to satisfy a selection process.

* Advanced Construction Cost Analysis/Site Organization and Operation of Production System.
* Application of Quantitative Analysis to Building Construction/Advanced Management in Construction.
* Advanced Estate Management in Public and Private Sector/Independent Study in Construction Management.
* Accounting and Management Economics/Development Economics and Design Management. Seminar in Construction/Advanced Industrial Psychology.
* Project Risk Management International Construction Management.

MASTER IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT (MPM) PROGRAMME
The Master in Project Management programme is designed to equip those involved with large projects in different sectors of the national economy with skills and knowledge necessary- to manage effectively available resources and to assist practicing managers and professionals by upgrading their knowledge of management theory and practices.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To qualift for admission to the M.P.M. programme a candidate must hold:
i. A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (B.Arch, M.Sc, MED., M. Arch) or at least a Bachelor of Science Building, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, Urban & Regional Planning.
ii. Or a Higher National Diploma with Upper Credit in Architecture (B.Arch,
M.Sc, MED., MArch), Building, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Estate
Management, Quantity Surveying, Urban & Regional Planning AND corporate membership of Nigeria
Institute of Architects, Nigerian Institute of Building, Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveying or Nigerian Institute of Town Planners or foreign equivalents.
iii. AU candidates must have five years post graduation experience in their respective fields.
iv All candidates are required to satisfy a selection process.

* Organizational Behaviour/Accounting and Finance.
* Industrial and Labour Law/Human and Industrial Relations.
* Quantitative Methods and Simulation Studies/Value Analysis.
* Resources Management/ Buildability /Negotiation/ Quality Assurance.
NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
Course work/ Seminar/ Case Studies/ Research Proposal/Research Project.
DURATION
The minimum duration of the course is two (2) academic year (24 calendar months)
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the Project Management programme can work in all sectors of the national economy — construction, information and communication technology oil and gas, finance, etc.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.PhIL) AND DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) IN BUILDING
The programmes are intended for candidates wishing to do postgraduate research in any area of Building.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To obtain a Ph.D. in Building a candidate must;
a. Take and pass at least six units at the 900 level.
b. Satisfy all other requirements as stipulated in the Regulations i of Postgraduate Studies
