The English Department runs two Programmes of the Master’s level — MA. English (Language)
and M.A. English Literature). It also offers a Ph.D. programme in Language or Literature that runs for four years.
ENTRY – REQUIREMENTS
An honours degree from any university in English, Languistics, English (Education), Creative or Performing Arts. For the Doctorate, a Second Class (Upper Division) degree or a Master of Arts Degree with a CGPA not lower than a 3.50for the M.Phil., and 4.00 for a direct PhD, on scale of 5.00.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
˟At the Master of Arts level, four Compulsory theoretical courses in phonology Grammar, Semantics and Stylistics in Language; and
˟Drama, Poetry,
Prose, Fiction and Literary Theory in Literature are offered in the first semester,
˟In both areas of specialization, a course in Research mandatory
* In the second sec wide range of courses to specialization in one of the areas.
NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
For the Master of Arts programme, there is written examination spread over two semesters as well as a thesis or dissertation. At the M.Phil. and Ph.D levels, coursework is by seminar presentation. Candidate for M.Phil. are also expected to pass the M.A. coursework if they came in directly with the B.A.
DURATION
The Master of Arts degreeslasts for twelve calendar months. The M.Phil. serves as a platform for conversion to the doctorate programme, provided the candidate meets the prescribed statutorily expected to last for three academic sessions.
