The Department of Estate Management offers Postgraduate Degree Programmes for Master of
Science (M.Sc.),Master of Philosophy M.Phi1.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Estate Management and Master of Facilities Management a professional degree programme.
MASTER or SCIENCE (M.Sc.)
The M.Sc. in Estate Management is designed to provide an opportunity for qualified professionals and academics to acquire advanced training and expertise in real estate valuation, finance, investment analysis and management. The well- structured comprehensive curriculum comprises taught courses, seminars and research. Strong urban emphasis is placed within the context of the globalizing real estate industry without compromising the requirements of national economic development, social welfare and environmental balance.
At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to apply advanced knowledge and technical skills in the solution of problems they might be confronted with either in advisory or executive capacity In addition, the programme equips candidates who show exceptional academic flair with the leverage required for the pursuit of M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees in estate management and related fields. Specialization areas include:
- Real estate valuation and investment appraisal
- Real estate asset portfolio management.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
* Intensive courses in Estate management and other related areas consisting of 26 units
* Compulsory Courses 10 units
* Core courses under the specialization area 8units
* Thesis/Project Work 4 units
* Electives 4 units The compulsory courses includes:
Advanced Property Valuation and Analysis, Urban Land Public Policy, contemporary Issues in Development finance, Advanced Research methodology and Quantitative \ Decision Analysis.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Phil.) ESTATE MANAGEMENT
The M.Phil. programme is designed to facilitate the development of critical and logical skill for high quality research in all aspects of Estate Management. The Programme promotes a high degree of scholarship through course work, seminars and independent research.
Candidates must possess EITHER
a) a good Master of science (M.Sc)degree in Estate management with a cumulative grade point not lower than 3.50 OR
b) a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree with a minimum of a second Class (Upper Division) in Estate Management, Building, Quantity Surveying of Urban and Regional Planning.
They may be required to undergo a selection process as part of which they must submit a preliminary research proposal of up to 500 words and on the basis of which they shall be assigned to supervisors based on merit and availability of space.
For full time candidates admitted under (a), the minimum duration of the programme will be two semesters, during which they shall be required to undertake a minimum of 9 units of relevant advanced courses. Full-time candidate admitted under (b) are to spend a minimum of 4 semesters during which they must undertakes a total of 30 units, comprising 21 units of courses prescribed at Master’s level to bridge any deficiencies in their prior qualifications and 9 units at advanced level. Part-time candidates shall be expected to spend a minimum of six semesters. Apart from satisfying course work requirements, candidates must submit a thesis of not more than 45,000 words.
DURATION
4 semesters (full -time) with M.Sc. 6 semesters with B.Sc. (Second Class Upper)
8 semesters (Part-time)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
M.Sc. in Estate Management with at least 3.5 cumulative grade point average OR at least B.Sc. Second Class (Upper Division) degree in Estate Management or prescribed cognate disciplines.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) Programme
The Ph.D. programme is designed to facilitate independent and original research within an interdisciplinary environment necessary for the development of scholarly skills and specialization.
Candidates must possess either a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree or a Master of Science degree in estate Management with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.00 on a 5-point scale. In all instances, candidates must submit a synopsis of their proposed research at the time of application to enable the Department decide the merit of their application and assign them to supervisors.
To qualify, candidates must complete a minimum of 6 units of course — work at advanced level and submit for assessment a thesis of 90,000 words which makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the field either through the development of new theory, connection of previously unrelated facts or discovery of new knowledge.
DURATION
6 – Semesters.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
M.PM. in Estate Management OR M.Sc. with at least 4.00 cumulative grade point average

Graduates of these programmes are qualified to work as academic and research staff for the Universities, Polytechnics/Colleges of Education and various public and private sector establishments.
