DEPARTMENT OF European Languages
The Department offers the M.A. in French as well as the specialized Master of Arts in Translation and the Masters in Teaching French as a foreign language.

To obtain the M.A. in French, a candidate must pass a minimum of 24 units (project inclusive), and satisfy other requirements of the school of Postgraduate Studies. The successful completion of the MA. degree in French qualifies the candidate to apply and register for an M.Phil. degree programme in French. The latter is meant for candidates who wish to become specialists in various aspects of French studies. To obtain the M.Phil. in French, the candidates must have very good grades in three compulsory courses, some of which are in form of seminars.

Candidates must also satisfy other requirements of the school of post-graduate Studies.

The M. Phil can lead to the Ph.D. in French, which is normally open to candidate who have an M.PhiI. in French or equivalent from reputable universities. To obtain the  PH.D in French, candidates must have good grades in the three compulsory courses, two of which are seminars. They must also satisfy requirements of the school of Postgraduate Studies.

Master of Arts (M.A) IN French
This course lasts for twelve calendar months. It consists of nine courses and a research project.
Courses may be given in the first or second semester, or run throughout the year.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in French
These programmes candidates wishing to do postgraduate research in French.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS M.A:
1. The programme will be open to candidates holding the degree of B.A. or equivalent in French of the University of Lagos or any other approved University
2. Candidates may be required to undergo a selection process.
M.Phil:
1. The M,Phil. programme is open to students holding either
(a) B.A. degree or equivalent in French with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division);
(b) an MA. or equivalent in French.
2. The Ph.D. programme is open only to those candidates holding an M.Phil. or its equivalent in French.
3. Candidates for admission into either the M.phil. or the Ph.D. programme may be required to undergo a selection process.

GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
* Structure of the French Language;
* Advanced Translation;
* Research and Critical Methods in French;
* Studies in Research Techniques;
* Bibliography in French; and
* Advances in the Study of Literature/Language.

NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
By course work, examination, seminar presentations and thesis

DURATION
The duration varies on the basis of the degree in view, the assiduity and responsiveness of the candidate to the demands of the programme. However, for the M.A., the duration is one calendar year.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
A holder of an M.A. degree in French, who is expected to be perfectly bilingual, can have a successful career in translation as well as in teaching, public administration, the private sector, transnational enterprises and diplomacy in which the knowledge of French will be considered a sine qua non for employment or will give the candidate an advantage over other candidates. An M. Phil or a Ph.D. in French makes the candidate to be exposed to a career knowledge of his area of specialization, which allows him to be a suitable candidate for teaching positions in a tertiary institution, and also in such other areas as public administration, diplomacy and NGOs.

MASTER OF ARTS IN TRANSLATION (MTL) AND MASTERS IN TEACHING OF FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (MTFFL)
This is an intensive professional course lasting two years and it is open to candidates holding the BA; in French in at least the Second Class Lower Division or equivalents from reputable Universities. Preference is given to candidates with relevant working experience. Candidates may be required to take a qualifying examination or undergo a selection process. All the courses of the MTL are compulsory, and so is the industrial attachment that lasts one month. To obtain MTL, candidates must pass in 52 units (project inclusive), and satisfy other requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT
I. Candidates should have a (B.A (Hons) degree in French or a B.
A. (E d)/B.Ed. French with a minimum of Second Class Lower (2 2) from recognized institutions.
2. Holders of Licence—es-lettres in French or its equivalent from recognized degree granting institutions.
* Specific Conditions Candidates must show proof of having undergone training in Language Immersion/year Abroad from recognized
institutions.
* Teaching experience would be added advantages.
* Candidates should be computer literate
