DEPARTMENT OF Geography and Planning
This is a Professional Programme which consists of Course works and Technical Project designed to leverage the professional edge of Geography as a discipline and link geographic science and related allied disciplines with policy and practice by training candidates that are capable of contributing to proffering solutions to pressing practical and
developmental challenges by employing spatial problem-solving skills and knowledge.
MASTERS IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (MGIS)
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Candidates with at least a B.Sc. degree in Geography, Surveying, or any field of Environmental or Earth Sciences, Social, Pure, Applied and Medical Sciences, Engineering and Business Administration, with at least a Second Crass (Lower) Division from the University of Lagos or any other comparable University are qualified to apply. Candidates with Third Class with at least 3 years of work experience may be considered for admission in exceptional circumstances.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
A total of 48 units including Technical Project are required to be taken and passed by candidates. The courses cover aspects of Elements of Geoinformatics, Spatial Data Structures, Computer Programming Manage Systems for GIS, Principles of Remote Sensing, image Analysis and Interpretation, Principles of Surveying, Cartographic Design and Map analysis, Geospatial Research Techniques, Spatial Statistics, and Management issues and Trends in GIS.
NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
By course work, e presentations and thesis.
DURATION OF PROGRAMME
The Programme is presently run on Part-Time basis for 3 Academic Semesters.

MASTERS IN TRANSPORT PLANNING AND MANAGEMRNT (MTP&M)
it is a Professional Programme which consists of Course work and technical Project designed to leverage the professional edge of Geography as a discipline in the areas of Transportation Planning and Management by producing critical mass of expertise that are capable of contributing to solving pressing transportation logistics planning and management challenges.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Candidates with at least a B.Sc. degree Geography, Surveying, or any field Environmental or Earth Sciences, social, Pure, Applied and Medical sciences, Engineering and Business Adminiistration, with at least a Second
Class (Lower) division from the University of Lagos or a comparable University are qualified to apply Graduates of Arts and Humanities with cognate experience in Transport related fields may also be considered. Candidates with Third Class degree in Geography or related disciplines with at least 3 years work experience may also be considered.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
A total of 30 units (including Technical Project) are required to be taken and passed be candidates. These courses cover aspects of Transport Policy and Regional Planning, Transportation Financing, Transportation Law Physical Distribution and International
Logistics, Computer Applications, GIS and Quantitative methods in Transport Research, Human
Resource Development in Transport, Transportation Insurance, Interference Traffic Systems, Port and Shipping Operations, Aviation and Air Transport, Oil and Gas Transport, and Urban and Rural Transport.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GEOGRAPHY
(M.Sc GEOGRAPHY)
This is an Academic Programme that consists of Course work and Technical Paper designed to equip the student with knowledge to approach and tackle spatial research challenges through current and relevant tools, skills and methodologies that would enable him/her initiate, plan and execute independent, creative and original researches into geo-environmental and spatial development problems.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
The programme is open to candidates with a good Bachelors (not below Second Class Lower) degree in Geography or related fields from the University of Lagos or any comparable University Mature candidates with Third Class in Geography or related fields, but with additional conversion qualifications such as PGD or Professional Masters in related fields plus cognate work experience may also be considered. Candidates are expected to specialize in one special option area which is reflected on the final certificate.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
Candidates are expected to offer and pass a minimum of 24 and maximum of 30 units which consists of 10 units of compulsory courses (GRY 801- Introduction to Spatial Analysis, GRY 802- Computer Applications in Geography, and GRY899- Technical Essay), compulsorily 8 units from candidates special option area, and 6 units of electives. The available special area options are: Agricultural Geography, Biogeography, Cartography, Climatology Geomorphology, Geotourism, Hydrology & Water Resources, Population Geography, Regional Planning, Remote Sensing, Resource Analysis, Settlement Geography, and Transportation Geography.

These are higher level Academic Programmes by research designed to deepen the spirit of independent inquiry into societal problems through novel and emerging science and contribute to the science -policy dialogue thereby promoting the advancement of a community of balanced high level scholars with potentials to contribute to national development.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
* The M.Phil Programme in Geography is open to a candidate who possesses a Bachelor’s degree Geography with a minimum of Second Class (upper Division) and/ – M.A./M.Sc. in Geography (with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 or its equivalent) from the University of Lagos or any other comparable university.
* The PhD Programmer Geography is candidate who possesss M.Phil degree in Geography or M.A/M.Sc. in Geography (with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or its equivalent) from the University of Lagos or any other comparable university .
* In both cases candidates who possess good M.Sc degree (with minimum CGPA of 3.5 for M.Phil and 4.0 for Ph.D) in Allied disciplines including Surveying, Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Transportation Studies, Water Resources Management, Meteorology Landscape architecture, Ecology, Natural Resource Management,
Demography/Population Studies, Agronomy and related Natural Sciences or Social Sciences from the University of Lagos or comparable Institution may be considered for admission.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
The M.Phil Programme in Geography consists of formal instructions, research seminar (s) and dissertation. A candidate may specialize in one of the areas listed under M.Sc Geography Programme. The duration of this programme is a minimum of two academic sessions. The PhD Programme is by original research. A candidate may undertake his/her research in one of the specialization areas listed under M.Sc Geography. The graduation require-ment for M.Phil and Phi) is as stated in Sections 16-27 and 33-44 of the General Regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
