DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING
The Department of Accounting
offers Postgraduate Diploma and
M.Sc./M.Phil. /Ph.D. in Accounting.

 

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) IN ACCOUNTING (PART-TIME)
Candidates shall be required to take and pass at least ten (10) courses of two (2) units each plus a project work and report of four (4) units. The course work shall be made up of both compulsory and elective courses.
For the project work, students
are expected to prepare a research report on a topic selected from any area of Accounting This must be
submitted for grading at the end of the third semester.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Eligible are holders of a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Accounting—related disciplines from this or any other approved University Such related disciplines include: Business Administration, Banking and
Finance, Management Economics, Insurance, Actuarial Science, Industrial Relations & Personnel Management; and holders of recognized Professional Accounting qualification with a Bachelor’s degree in any other discipline.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
Courses in Accounting and
related subjects consists of 24 units.

Compulsory courses
16 units.
Electives 4 units.
Project work and report 4 units.

NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
Candidates must score at least an
grade (i.e. 40%) in each of the
courses and obtain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.40 in order to pass and be awarded the PGD in Accounting.
DURATION
Eighteen (I8) calendar months
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The PGD programme in Accounting provides a basic knowledge in accounting to enable graduates of non- accounting courses qualify for the M.Sc. programme, which will equip them to work as academic and research staff for
Universities, Polytechnics/Colleges of Education and various public and private sector establishments.

 

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) IN ACCOUNTING
Candidates will be expected to take intensive courses in Accounting and other related areas, which must be completed before the writing of the thesis/project work report.
The second part of the programme will be devoted to the project work report or thesis. The candidate must participate in Research Seminars where occasional papers,
proposals and preliminary reports of the project work must be presented.
All candidates must take and pass a course in Research Methodology The candidate also shall prepare his/her project work report under the guidance of a Supervisor appointed by the Department. The report must be successfully defended before the Thesis/Project Report Committee appointed by the Department.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Eligible for the M.Sc. Accounting programme are holders of a good Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Accounting from this or any approved University Holders of the University of Lagos PGD in Accounting (with a GPA not below 3.00) or approved equivalent may also apply.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
* Intensive courses in Accounting and other related areas, consisting of 26 units. Compulsory courses 16 units. Elective courses 4 units. Research Seminar in Accounting 2 units.
Thesis/Project Work & Report 4 units.

The compulsory courses include: Advanced Theory in Accounting, Management Accounting & Controls, Auditing, Theory and Practice, Public Sector Accounting,Tax Planning and Management, Global Accounting, Ethics in Accounting and Research Methodology.
NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
Candidates must score at least an H grade (i.e. 40%) in each of the courses and obtain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA of 2.40 in order to pass and be awarded the M.Sc. (Accounting) degree.
DURATION
Twelve (12) calendar months
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of this programme are qualified to work as academic and research staff for Universities, Polytechnics/Colleges of Education and various public and private sector establishments.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Phil.)
The Master of Philosophy degree in Accounting is a research-oriented programme. The first part of the programme consists of course work while the second part will be devoted the dissertation.
All candidates must take and pass a course in Research Methodology.
The candidate also shall prepare his/her dissertation work report under the guidance of a Supervisor appointed by the Postgraduate School upon the recommendation of the Department. The report successfully defended before the Dissertation Report Committee appointed by the Department approved by the Postgraduate School.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT Eligible are: (a) holders of 2 degree (M.Sc.) in Accounting from this University or any approved University, with a minimum 3.50; or (b) holders of a Bachelor’s degree B.Sc.) in Accounting with, at least, Second Class Upper I from this University or other approved University.

NATURE OF ASSESSMENT
Course work and thesis candidate who is unable to attain up to a Grade Point Average (GPA if 4.00 but has successfully defended his/her thesis, or a :candidate who decides not to :convert to Ph.D. programme even Though he/she attains a minimum GPA of 4.00, shall be awarded an [Phil. degree.
DURATION
The period of study for the M.Phil. counting is a minimum of four :academic semesters
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The programme equips an individual for an academic career at the higher institution of learning and research- rented jobs in both the private and public sectors.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. in Accounting is a research programme designed to provide an in-depth knowledge in accounting subject areas for those in wish to obtain a high degree of competence in the study of accounting. The first part of the programme consists of course work while the second part will be devoted to areas of specialization and the thesis. The candidate must participate in doctoral research seminars where occasional papers, proposals and preliminary reports of thesis must be presented.
All candidate must take and pass a course in research methodology.
The candidate will also be required to undertake an approved research cc produce a thesis under the guidance of a Supervisor appointed
by the Postgraduate School upon the ,recommendation of the Department. The thesis must he successfully defended before the Thesis Report Committee appointed by the Department and approved by the Postgraduate School.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Eligible are:
(a) holders of M.Phil. Degree in Accounting from this University or any other approved university;
(b) holders of Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Accounting with a minimum GPA of 4.00.
GENERAL COURSE CONTENT
The programme is composed of three parts, namely:
(1) Course work leading to the qualifying examinations.
(2) Doctoral Research Seminars in Accounting
(3) Doctoral Thesis.
* Candidates admitted under (a) above will be required to offer and pass six (6) units of course work, which must be completed during the first year, but not later than the first semester of the second year.
* Candidates admitted under b) above will be required to offer and pass six (6) units of course work at the M.Phil. level in addition to the six (6) units stated above at the Ph.D. level.
Candidates must pass the course work with a minimum Grade Point Average of 4.00 before proceeding to thesis writing.

DURATION
The period of study for the Ph.D. Accounting programme shall be in accordance with the regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Ph.D. degree holders are qualified to serve as academic and research staff for the Universities, Polytechnics/Colleges of Education and other needy institutions both in the private and public sectors.
